UOB (Malaysia) donates RM200,000 to fund P.S The Children programmes

Contribution signals milestone initiative in Bank's CSR programme

Kuala Lumpur, 30 June 2009 - United Overseas Bank (Malaysia) Bhd ["UOB (Malaysia)"] today announced its partnership with Protect and Save the Children Association of Selangor and Kuala Lumpur ("P.S The Children") to fund P.S The Children's Keeping Me Safe programme in six primary schools in Klang Valley.

The tie-up marks another milestone in UOB (Malaysia)'s Corporate Social Responsibility ("CSR") programme, and is funded by the donations collected from the UOB Heartbeat Run, which was held in December 2008. This was the Bank's first CSR programme.

The UOB Heartbeat Run kicked off a staff donation drive using pledge cards with more than RM200,000 raised. P.S The Children received RM100,000 and the balance will be earmarked for 2010's CSR programmes. On top of that, the donated amount was matched "Ringgit for Ringgit" by the Bank, resulting in a total of RM200,000 donation for P.S The Children.

At the media conference to announce the partnership, Mr Chan Kok Seong, Director and Chief Executive Officer of UOB (Malaysia), presented a cheque of RM200,000 to Datin Nariza Hajjar Hashim, Patron of P.S The Children. The corporate sponsorship will fully fund the Personal Safety programme developed by P.S The Children. It is spearheaded by the Keeping Me Safe curriculum for six primary schools in 2009. In addition, the corporate sponsorship will also subsidise Personal Safety curriculum specially-tailored for hearing-impaired teenagers and Play Therapy sessions carried out by P.S The Children.

In the presence of the guest-of-honour, Puan Ashah Bt Samah, Director of Cluster/Fully Residential School Management Division of the Ministry of Education, Mr Chan also presented a goodwill basket to Datin Nariza Hajjar Hashim. The basket consisted of "goodies" such as MP3 recorders/players, CD combo player, lamination machines and films, which P.S The Children can use in its course of work to facilitate their programmes.

In his address to the guests and media, Mr Chan said, "Our CSR programme is in sync with our parent bank's CSR focus on children, education and the arts. We are happy and proud to be associated with P.S. The Children and support them in their mission towards building safer communities where our children can thrive in. We are mindful of the communities in which we operate in and would like to make a positive contribution to it. It is in this spirit that UOB (Malaysia) launched its CSR programme, called the UOB Heartbeat, last year. I would also like to take the opportunity to acknowledge the efforts put in by UOB (Malaysia) staff. Without their strong support, the P.S The Children partnership would not have been possible. I trust that their participation in such CSR programmes will enrich their lives in some way."

Mr Chan also added, "UOB (Malaysia)'s contribution is not just limited to monetary support, as a group of our staff are actively participating in the Keeping Me Safe programme as observers."

Datin Nariza Hajjar Hashim concurs, "We are thankful that UOB (Malaysia) joins us as our corporate partner in our efforts in Saying YES to Child Protection. Their contribution goes a long way towards ensuring the success of our programmes, especially the Keeping Me Safe programme."

Members of the public who wish to support the UOB Heartbeat's cause can pledge their contributions via deposit at any UOB (Malaysia) branch or cheque made payable to UOB Heartbeat (account number: 248-3-031948-9). Alternatively, they can mail their cheque to UOB (Malaysia) at the following address: Corporate Affairs, Level 4, Menara UOB, Jalan Raja Laut, 50350 Kuala Lumpur.
