UOB Malaysia is the first bank to receive GreenRE platinum certification for its corporate headquarters

UOB Plaza 1 Kuala Lumpur reflects the Bank’s dedication to sustainability and long-term commitment to Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 22 January 2024 – UOB Malaysia today announced that its new corporate headquarters, UOB Plaza 1 Kuala Lumpur, has been awarded the prestigious platinum certification from GreenRE Real Estate (GreenRE). Platinum is the highest level in GreenRE’s green building rating system, making UOB Plaza 1 the first bank headquarters in Malaysia to be recognised for its sustainable design, construction, and wellness features.

 

Completed in September 2022, the lantern-shaped office building is located at the heart of Kuala Lumpur and is the professional home to more than 3,000 of the Bank’s employees. It also houses the Bank’s main branch and wealth centre. Designed to cultivate a high-performing and future-ready workforce, UOB Plaza 1 features open collaborative areas and workspaces equipped with state-of-the-art technology to foster collaboration, creativity, and culture.

Among the key considerations contributing to GreenRE’s platinum certification on UOB Plaza 1 Kuala Lumpur include:

  • Sustainable architecture: UOB Plaza 1 Kuala Lumpur was built with sustainable features that incorporates environmentally-friendly and non-toxic materials that are safe for occupants, durable, and low-maintenance.
  • Efficient energy, water and waste management: To optimise energy consumption, the building leverages energy-efficient materials and equipment for its indoor cooling and lighting. It also uses water-efficient fittings and rainwater harvesting system, thus contributing to the reduction of carbon footprint while promoting a circular economy.
  • Focus on people’s well-being: UOB Plaza 1 Kuala Lumpur places a significant emphasis on the well-being of its employees. Abundant natural light, superior indoor air quality that is constantly monitored, and green spaces contribute to a positive and healthy working environment. The building also boasts plenty of amenities to support employees’ wellbeing including a gymnasium, childcare centre, health clinic and bistros at every floor. Incorporating greenery in its interior and external surroundings, it has two botanically-inspired sky gardens for both recreational amenities and formal areas on level 18 and 29. Apart from its indoor multi-purpose hall, the outdoor social areas were also created to foster deeper community engagement.

 

UOB Malaysia’s efforts in sustainability were recently recognised by The Asian Business Review at its inaugural ESG Business Awards 2023. The Bank took home two awards for its efforts in promoting Renewable Energy and Workplace Wellness.

 

In line with global standards, the GreenRE’s rating system adheres to the World Green Building Council's Quality Assurance Guide for Green Building Rating Tools, ensuring alignment in the development, implementation and operation of green building rating tools.
